Jeff took an unconventional route to becoming an artist. He worked as an engineer by trade and designed machinery for a large portion of his career. While approaching retirement, he started sketching/drawing, but soon became aware of an art form which he never knew existed. His wife, who is a long-time artist, brought back photos she took while attending an exhibit in the Fall of 2017. He was immediately intrigued by the some of the pieces of art, which the artist described as metal engraving. He was thoroughly impressed by the simplicity of the black and white images, and even more so, the elaborate detail one can achieve, using the process to depict fur, feathers, and other highly detailed objects. So, he painted a scrap piece of aluminum sheet with black paint and using a scratch awl, scratched a simple feather. After making several more pieces, using a variety of tools, and becoming absolutely hooked, he performed an internet search and found that this type of art actually had a name (scratch art or scratchboard art) and discovered the basic tools and methods scratchboard artists use for this medium. Further searching uncovered the International Society of Scratchboard Artists, which showed numerous examples of scratchboard art by many of the leaders in the field. After a couple of years of scratching, he applied for, and was juried into being an active member of the above organization.
